The San Diego Mandolin Orchestra was formed in 1968 by conductor Victor De Guide. When he retired in 1979, Jim Trepasso and Eugene Vacher took over as conductors and arrangers. Jim is a dedicated music teacher at Correia Junior High School in the San Diego area, with degrees in music from Northern Michigan University. In addition to his teaching career in St. Louis, Coronado, and San Diego, he has played in numerous symphonies from Michigan, Kansas, Hawaii, and including the Army Band, the San Diego County Symphony and the San Diego City Guard Band. Jim was awarded the honor of "Band Director of the Year" for San Diego in 2000.

The San Diego Mandolin Orchestra were the hosts for the 2003 CMSA Convention.

Gene's musical career spans several decades and includes traveling around the world as Band Master in the US Army, retiring as Assistant Chief of Bands, playing in the San Diego Symphony, and teaching in public schools. He is currently the Band Master for the San Diego City Guard Band, in which he also plays the horn. Gene is particularly gifted in creating orchestral arrangements, many of which are still played today. When he's not conducting, he plays the mandocello in the orchestra, and refuses to slow down even though he is well into his 90's.

Our large selection of music includes classical, show tunes, ethnic, pop and country. And we enjoy performing in a variety of venues: community festivals & concerts, charity events, shopping centers, private parties, weddings, etc. Among our 38 members, we have 12 first mandolins, 16 second mandolins, 2 mandolas, 2 mandocellos, 1 octave mandolin, 4 guitars and 1 bass-guitar. We are so fortunate to have the talented Ted Scafidi leading the group as Concertmaster.

New members are always welcome, and if you are visiting in the area, stop by and join us! You'll enjoy the friendly family atmosphere and our enthusiasm for mandolin music!
